the Tiree venue

The Tiree Tech Wave venue is in the Tiree Rural Centre, which includes the island cinema, a multi-purpose space which we will also use – ideal for impromptu presentations … even 3D films!  The Rural Centre is located less than 10 minutes walk from the beach, perfect for lunchtime walks … but do bring warm clothes as it can be windy!

getting To Tiree

The Tech Wave will start at mid-day on Thursday timed for the arrival of both the flight from Glasgow and ferry from Oban.  For getting back the flight and ferry leave on Tuesday morning.  However, you can also stay a few days longer and enjoy the island some more.

by air – The flight from Glasgow takes about 40 minutes. There are daily flights except Sundays, see the Flybe web site for full timetable and bookings.  The flight leaves in the morning, there are connecting flights from some UK airports, or you can travel  to Glasgow the night before and stay overnight at one of the Glasgow Airport hotels.

by ferry – There are ferries from Oban on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. See Calmac web site for full timetable.  The ferry leaves around 6:45am (some variations this winter, check timetable), so you need to be there early! You can get to Oban by train or bus from Glasgow, or you can drive by various routes past mountains and lochs.

Car and bike hire is available on the island and there is also a dial-a-bus service.

If you are coming by ferry you will need to spend a night in Oban see details of accommodation in Oban.

food

Lunches and day-time refreshments are included in the registration cost, and the Cobbled Cow is on site if you get peck-ish mid-afternoon!

We may do supper some evenings at the Rural Centre where the The Cobbled Cow is also sited.  There are a couple of other places open for lunch and/or dinner:  Scarinish Hotel and at Scarinish where the ferry comes in, Cèabhar (pronounced Kay-var) on the West coast, the Farmhouse Cafe in the South.  We will book group tables for these, but dinner is not included in the costs.

fun

We hope the Tech Wave itself will be fun!  However, if you want to come early or stay after, this is the place for kite-surfing and wind-surfing, also good diving and even a golf course with stunning views. If you are coming by plane and want to hire equipment, let us know so we can put you in touch with the local water-sport centres.

mobilephones

Only Vodafone and O2 operate on Tiree  … and don’t expect 3G — this is an island!

(Although at the far east you can sometimes pick up Coll’s 4G mast)
