short talk, wine and nibbles
Science is breaking out of the lab! National events such as Spring Watch mean everyone can become part of big science projects. The Open University are involved in a number of projects that enable anyone to contribute and to learn in large-scale science.
One of these projects is iSpot a nature recording and identification web site and app, which will be used in the Saturday “What’s that Beastie” workshop. iSpot allows you to record wildlife and plant sightings, including photos, even when you do not recognise what you have seen. Other people in the iSpot community can then hep to identify it. So far of 200 nature groups are using Spot for specific projects as well as many individuals.
Mark Gaved, from the Open University, will talk about iSpot and other citizen science projects and lead into a discussion of how this kind of system could be useful on Tiree with its rich natural environment.
